Brucella meningitis: first reported case in Egypt.

چکیده
Brucellosis, an infectious disease transmitted to humans principally through exposure to contaminated milk products, is endemic to the Middle East [1]. In Egypt, a crosssectional study found that 11% of the population had serological evidence of infection with Brucella spp., while a study of acute febrile illnesses found that 3% of all bacteraemias were caused by the organism [2,3]. Brucella spp. has been reported as a cause of meningitis in many parts of the world. But, despite the frequent finding of Brucella bacteraemia, as far as we know the agent has not been previously reported in the medical literature as a cause of meningitis in Egypt. The current case thus represents the first report of cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) culturepositive Brucella meningitis in Egypt.

A Case of Multi-Ulcerative Abscess Due to Brucella abortus in Kerman, South East of Iran
Cutaneous involvement is an unusual complication in brucellosis that has been reported to range between 0.4% and 17%. We here introduce a 40-year-old shepherd, who presented with two ulcerative abscesses in his lower left leg. Cultivation of the abscess aspirate was positive for Brucella abortus. The first titer of his serological test was 1/160, which subsequently rose to 1/640. In countries l...
متن کاملBrucella spp. infection in large ruminants in an endemic area of Egypt: cross-sectional study investigating seroprevalence, risk factors and livestock owner's knowledge, attitudes and practices (KAPs)
BACKGROUND Brucellosis is regarded as one of the major zoonotic infections worldwide. It was first reported in Egypt in 1939 and is now endemic, the predominate species of Brucella in cattle and buffalo in Egypt is B. melitensis. The aim of the study was to estimate seroprevalence of Brucella spp. in cattle and buffalo reared in households in an Egyptian village, identify risk factors for anima...
متن کاملAssessment of Genetic Diversity of Zoonotic Brucella spp. Recovered from Livestock in Egypt Using Multiple Locus VNTR Analysis
Brucellosis is endemic in most parts of Egypt, where it is caused mainly by Brucella melitensis biovar 3, and affects cattle and small ruminants in spite of ongoing efforts devoted to its control. Knowledge of the predominant Brucella species/strains circulating in a region is a prerequisite of a brucellosis control strategy. For this reason a study aiming at the evaluation of the phenotypic an...

متن کاملCryptococcus neoformans var. gattii meningitis in Egypt: a case report.
Cryptococcus neoformans is an encapsulated yeast ubiquitous in nature which, when it infects humans, typically causes pulmonary disease and occasionally meningitis [1]. Serotyping of the organism has identified 3 main varieties: C. neoformans var. grubii (serotype A), C. neoformans var. neoformans (serotype D) and C. neoformans var. gattii (serotypes B and C) [2]. Serotypes A and D have been is...
